I’m Audrey Clement, Independent candidate for Arlington County Board on November 3. I’m a 22 year resident of Arlington County, past member of the Transportation Commission and current delegate to the Arlington Neighborhoods Advisory Committee and Arlington Civic Federation.
This is not my first run for County Board, and I’m routinely dissed by local media as a “perennial protest candidate.” What the media don’t say is what I’m protesting and why.
I’m protesting 40+ years of local one-party rule, an unaccountable machine that elects officials based on a fraction of the voters who show up for the Democrat primaries. This is unfortunate, because perpetual one party rule constitutes tyranny not democracy.
Nevertheless I take comfort from the fact that someone else portrayed as an “also ran” is now making headlines. Justus Kelley, an Arlington native, just won the Miss America title and will participate in the Miss Universe contest in November.
ARLnow reported that Kelley “had been chasing the Miss USA crown for the last 10 years.” and quoted her saying: “I am proof that someone’s wildest dreams can truly become reality when ordinary people refuse to quit.”
Another crowd that doesn’t know when to quit is Neighbors for Neighborhoods [NfN], which has steadfastly opposed the County’s misguided Missing Middle housing initiative since it was adopted in 2023.
On the aesthetic impact of outsized pre-fab multiplexes on clearcut lots, NfN described what happened when they inspected 2401-2405 North Potomac Street, the site of the latest Missing Middle monstrosity:
“We just drove by N. Potomac St. and almost ran off the road after seeing an enormous six-townhouse development quickly go up where a single-family home once stood.”
I’m running in opposition to Missing Middle up-zoning, a/k/a/ EHO, because I too believe that the County’s housing policy has gone off the rails, and someone needs to apply the brakes.
If elected I pledge to:
- Stop Missing Middle up-zoning.
- Seek immediate tax relief for residents and businesses.
- Reduce the office vacancy rate by getting tax burdened New York City businesses to relocate here.
- Restore the local economy by getting the federal government to rehire its workforce.
